Killarney is leading the way in sustainability, becoming the first town in the EU to eliminate single-use takeaway coffee cups with the help of 2GoCup’s. Over 50 local businesses have joined forces to replace single-use cups with a better solution: the 2GoCup Deposit and Return scheme.
From July 31st 2023, all participating businesses stopped offering disposable cups, encouraging customers to embrace sustainable options. You can now:
- Bring your own reusable cup,
- Enjoy your coffee in a ceramic cup or,
- Use a 2GoCup by paying a €2 deposit. With 2GoCup, you can swap your cup for a clean one at your next coffee stop or return it to any participating business to reclaim your deposit.
So far, we have saved over 1.5 million cups from landfill in just under 18 months!
This innovative project was co-funded by Kerry County Council, Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, Killarney National Park & Department of Housing, Local Government & Heritage, and Killarney Tourism Board. We extend our heartfelt thanks to these supporters, as well as to the passionate campaign organizers, Ciara Treacy and Louise Byrne, whose dedication to sustainability made this possible.
Together, we’re reshaping how Killarney experiences coffee on the go—embracing convenience without waste. Check out the participating businesses or reach out to us at info@2gocup.ie for more details.
